Anthoor Municipality
A Village in Kannur District
Anthoor Municipality is a newly formed municipality in the Kannur district. In 1990, the Taliparamba Municipality was formed by combining the Anthoor Grama Panchayat and the Taliparamba Grama Panchayat. In 2015, Taliparamba Municipality was bifurcated to form Anthoor Municipality with Dharmasala as its headquarters. The municipality consists of Anthoor village and Morazha village.
It has an area of 24.12 sq. km and a population of 28,218. Out of its 29 wards, there are 14 general wards, one Scheduled Caste reserved ward, and 14 women-reserved wards. According to the 2011 Indian Census, the population of the municipality was 28,218.[3]
Anthoor is located on the western bank of the Valapattanam River, approximately 6 km south of Taliparamba town and 15 km north of Kannur.[4][5]
Etymology
The name "Anthoor" means "large village." Due to its large size, the town was divided into two villages: Anthoor and Morazha. The Anthoor hill is mentioned in several Theyyam folk songs and Thottam Pattu.

History
Anthoor was previously under the rule of the Kolathiri dynasty. Later, Tipu Sultan annexed this region to the Kingdom of Mysore. During the British rule, it was under the Chirakkal Taluk of the Malabar District in the Madras Presidency. After the formation of Kerala State, this area became a panchayat in Kannur district. Later, with the creation of Taliparamba Municipality, Anthoor Panchayat merged into it. Currently, Anthoor is an independent municipality in the Kannur district of Kerala State
